Costly customs entry errors

Customs entry errors are costly and can result in VAT and duty demands long after the error occured

In a costly lesson, a major UK fashion retailer and their freight forwarder agent experienced the importance of correctly completing customs declarations and supporting documentation.

On behalf of the retailer, the Freight Forwarder/Agent had attempted to declare multiple movements to Outward Processing Relief (“OPR”). However, upon HMRC investigation, several errors where detected.

Detected errors included:

  • Tariff classification code and written description in import and export documents did not match
  • The export document did not properly identify the consignor or their number
